Letter to the Editor: Can We Help?

Amarillo Texas

I am working with Marriott and they are in the process of restoring the old Fisk Building here in Amarillo Texas. They are wanting to try and find any old information of the Fisk Building. They are looking for old postcards, old pictures and old articles about it. I have quite a few postcards showing the building but I am sure there are more out there. They would like to find some showing the construction of it, etc. I am expecting that the ones we would be looking for would probably be the old real photo postcards. If you can help me with this, I would appreciate it.
Thanks - Ron

Some Auction Highlights:

Highlights in the October auction include, the Jim Helyar Collection of WWI Military, both U.S. and Europe , European views, Military, Cigarette Cards and Ephemera. Many great eastern Europe views, great Russian military and more. James Helyar, born and raised in London, has had a lifelong passion for collecting. While the bulk of his collecting centered on military uniforms, particularly 19th and early 20th century British and French uniforms, he was also keenly interested in the history of London and the history of graphic design. A librarian since the age of 18, he was able to turn his collector’s eye to the benefit of the University of Kansas Libraries, ending his career there working as a curator of rare books at the Kenneth Spencer Research Library. Jim was passionate about postcards, regularly attending the regional shows, and always on the lookout for interesting cards in his frequent travels to Europe. He regularly traded cards with a friend in France, leading him to amass a remarkably thorough collection of WW1 French military materia.

Additionally,we have received a huge consignment of 100,000 plus cards from California, featuring automobilia, roadsides, state views and more. Additional material from the huge Walter Whelp Collection(views, topics and real photos, and the Charles and Carol Kimball Collection (Political and Occupations) and the Wengert Collection of Medical/Military postcards. Great signed artist, RPPC and printed state views, something for everyone. The online catalog will be ready near end of September, pre-bidding can begin then, live auction in house, and Knight Live begins Oct 20. Over 1000 lots per day. A special rarieties auction is being planned, with a printed color catalog is being planned for later, before the end of the year.

We are currently looking for better material for our May 2011 Postcard and Paper Auction.

"Letter to the Editor"

Thanks Jim for your very interesting publication - only wish I was in the USA to get along to the many events you have listed.
Here in Victoria, Australia - I am trying to rebuild a Historical collection in the small township of Marysville, Victoria - that lost its entire collection of postcards and other historical items in the bushfires in 2009.
Is there any way that you could let your readers know that I am looking for Postcards of Marysville, Australia and surrounding townships such as Narbethong and Fernshaw - as well as any postcards of Nellie Melba - who often visited Marysville. Quite happy to purchase these - and have already made many friends in the USA with other postcard collectors.
Any help would be greatly appreciated - to help me help this Community that lost forty members of its Community in the fires - rebuild their collection. Marysville in Kansas has asked to be a Sister City - to help - and so has Marysville in Canada.

With Kind Regards, Andrew Mackenzie

COLLINSVILLE, IL

St. Louis Gateway Postcard Club 34th Annual Show

VFW Hall, 1234 Vandalia St. (Highway 159)

Friday: 10 AM -6 PM (Gateway Club Members get in at 9 AM).

Sat: 9 AM-4 PM.

FREE Admission.

Gateway Post Card Club 35th Annual Show

The St. Louis Gateway Post Card Club is hosting its 35th annual show over Labor Day weekend Friday, September 3, 2010, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Saturday, September 4, 2010 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The show, featuring some 25 dealers, will once again be held at the convenient, spacious, and well-lighted VFW Hall at 1234 Vandalia St. (Hwy 159) in Collinsville, IL just east off Interstate 55/70. It's only 15 minutes from the famous St. Louis Gateway Arch. The Gateway Show is one of the few that offers free admission plus free parking, free appraisals, and attendance prizes. There is excellent food available on site, especially those delicious home-made pies.

The Gateway Post Card Club, one of the older clubs in the nation, was founded on January 7, 1974. Monthly meetings are held at the Kirkwood Community Center, 111 S. Geyer Rd. in St. Louis, except for July when there is a picnic, September because of the show, and December when we have a holiday party at a local restaurant. At our monthly meetings, members begin to arrive at 6:30 p.m. for buying and selling of post cards. A short business meeting starts at 7:30 p.m., followed by a featured program of interest or an occasional auction of post cards. We invite you to attend one of our monthly meetings and consider membership, which is only $10.00 a year and includes your spouse. The membership more than pays for itself with the value received in the July picnic, December holiday party and most importantly a quality and informative quarterly newsletter. Membership also entitles one to early admission to the annual show.

Whether you are a veteran collector, a beginner, or just someone who has a few cards which you would like to know more about, our show is the place for you. We have a good cross-section of knowledgeable dealers with thousands of quality post cards for sale in all price ranges, old to new, and from subjects A-Z. You name it and I'm sure you will find it. It's a casual atmosphere where you can browse leisurely to find that perfect card or just learn more about what the exciting hobby of post card collecting is all about.

If you have questions or need more information, please contact our show chairman Tom Snyder at 618-531-4189 or by e-mail at: the.snyders@charter.net

Hope to see you there!

Hello!
I am always looking for cards of my two favorite towns: Panama City, FL and St. Andrews, FL (a/k/a Saint Andrew, FL). I like all views and eras, but of course the older cards are most desirable! Also, a steamer ship called the Tarpon (which used to sail between Pensacola and Panama City) is another interest of mine. If you have any of these, please let me know and if you don't have any right now, I hope you'll keep me in mind in the future! Thanks so much!
