My Home Town...Plano Texas

In 1852 a small farming community about 20 miles north of Dallas applied for a post office. The name Plano (pronounced plain-o) was selected because local settlers thought it was Spanish for "plain" which would accurately describe the country. The correct translation, however, is "flat" which the area certainly is not. Since the error wasn't discovered until long after the name had been approved by postal authorities it was too late to change so Plano it remains. For generations, Plano remained a very small community known primarily for splendid, bountiful crops, good hunting and state championship football teams. By 1960, the population had swelled to just under 4,000. Then came the explosive growth of Dallas and the mass migration to the South. Today, Plano is a thriving, upscale community of 300,000+ and is the home of numerous corporate giants such as Frito Lay. Plano is also home to the greater Dallas Post Card Show. The image in the postcard dates to around 1910. The dirt street and horse and buggy outfits are long gone but the memories are preserved forever in a real photo postcard.

Mark your calendars for the 21st Metro East Postcard Show in Collinsville,
IL, April 2 and 3, 2010. This is one of the two premier postcard shows held
each year in the greater St Louis area. Formerly hosted by Danny & Kathy
Danielsen, this show is now operated by Tom & Pat Snyder of Mascoutah, IL.
The Snyders have been dealers since the mid 1980s. Tom has been the show
chairman for the St Louis Gateway Post Card Club annual show for the last
seven years, and promises the same quality shows collectors and dealers have
come to expect from the Metro East Postcard Shows.
The show is held at the VFW Hall at 1234 Vandalia (IL 159) on the north side
of Collinsville, about 15 minutes from downtown St Louis. The location is
reached easily by I-70, I-55, and I-64. The show usually has about 25
dealers. Admission is free and parking is ample. The hours are 9 am to 6
pm on Friday April 3 and 9-4 pm on Saturday, April 4. For more information

Also, a steamer ship called the Tarpon (which used to sail between Pensacola and Panama City) is another interest of mine. from 1906-1918 and worked exclusively in Stone and Taney Counties,
Missouri. He made approximately 900 real photo view cards of the
Shepherd of the Hills area which includes the towns of Branson,
Hollister, Galena and Reeds Spring. I am seeking examples of his work
