Snapshots of Early 20th-Century Arizona: A Postcard Legacy

Desert Caballeros Western Museum
—21 N. Frontier St., Wickenburg, AZ
westernmuseum.org, (928) 684-2272.
“Snapshots of Early 20th-Century Arizona: A Postcard Legacy,” through Sept. 12, showcases Dr. Jeremy Rowe’s collection of photographic postcards and artifacts from early Arizona (1900-1930).
"Snapshots of Early Twentieth Century Arizona: A Postcard Legacy"
Photographic postcards provide a significant but relatively unknown legacy of photographs documenting its growth of Arizona from the 1900 through statehood. The popularity of the post card paralleled one of the most rapid and exciting periods of Arizona's development. Often, photographic postcards are all that remains of the company camps and towns of the early 20th century. These cards, sent to friends and investors, or slipped into albums, are valuable and insightful reminders of these pioneering Western towns and lives.
Postcard camera documented Arizona's evolution from Territory to statehood during the period from 1900-1912. Territorial Fairs and small town parades, views of emerging downtown business districts, railway accidents, mining activity, and images of daily activity were all captured as photographic postcards and sent to friends and relatives around the world. Photographic postcards were used to market and promote Arizona, and continued to document historic events like the Mexican Border War that shaped our state.
Like stereographs decades before, virtually every Arizona photographer operating before 1920 created and marketed photographic postcards. In addition, many drugstores, newsstands, curio shops and hotels offered photographic postcards to their customers. Inexpensive cameras and photographic printing created a significant body of amateur documentation of the events that shaped daily life. These provide a legacy of tens of thousands of Arizona postcards that document this nostalgic and exciting period of growth and development.
From 1900 until about 1930, postcards were the e-mail, telephone, and promotional videos of the time. They were the primary common link between friends and family, vacationers and home, and even for business correspondence between businesses and their traveling salesmen. High quality printed copies of these photographic images further extended the market for postcards. There was "Postcard Mania" with postcards actively collected with individuals and clubs exchanging millions of postcards every year. Since most of these cards were produced locally, these photographic postcards provide a remarkable historic record.
Guest curator and collector, Dr. Jeremy Rowe has worked with the Desert Caballeros Museum to create "Snapshots of Early Twentieth Century Arizona: A Postcard Legacy." This exhibit includes images and artifacts are from Dr. Rowe's collection as digital enlargements of about 90 images. Also included are postcard related advertising and ephemera, and a selection of the cameras and equipment that were used to create these images. The exhibit includes some of the best Arizona real photographic postcards, many reproduced in his book Arizona Real Photo Postcards: A History and Portfolio.

This 42 pages guide lists the cards in alphabetical order, and includes the artist, series, rarity, and an estimated value range for NM-M cards. Thumbnail size color images of the cards are included, as well as color images of the vending machines used in their original marketing. There are two additional sorted lists (without pictures) by artists and series. The Artists: Vaughn Alden Bass, Rolf Armstrong, F.Earl Christy, William Haskell Coffin, Howard Connolly, Edward D'Ancona, DelMasters, Billy DeVorss, Gil Elvgren, Art Frahm, Mabel Rollins Harris, Henry Hintermeister, Earl Steffa Moran, Zoe Mozert, K.O. Hello!
I am always looking for cards of my two favorite towns: Panama City, FL and St. Andrews, FL (a/k/a Saint Andrew, FL). I like all views and eras, but of course the older cards are most desirable! Also, a steamer ship called the Tarpon (which used to sail between Pensacola and Panama City) is another interest of mine. If you have any of these, please let me know and if you don't have any right now, I hope you'll keep me in mind in the future! Thanks so much!
