Dr Bob.....We Miss You
Yesterday we received the following information regarding our dear friend, and fellow IFPD member:

"Robert (Bob) D. Gardner, 85, a former psychiatrist and Executive Director of
the Central VA Community Services Board, died Dec. 7 at Westminster Canterbury.

Dr. Gardner, was also known as Dr. Nostalgia, a purveyor of antiques and
collectibles, most notably postcards and paper memorabilia. Bob Gardner was
born and raised in Trenton, NJ, but moved to Virginia to attend the University
of VA in 1943 and thereafter made Virginia his home. During WW II, he served in
the US Army Medical Corps. Dr. Gardner attended UVA Medical School, served at
the VA hospital in Roanoke, taught at UVA medical school and opened a private

--------------------------
I had the opportunity to visit with "Dr Bob" just before the York International Postcard Show, discussing the postcard hobby, his ideas for IFPD, and IFPD business in general as well as his collection and show stock. He was a good friend of the hobby, and a good friend of mine, and we will all miss him.
His service to IFPD as well as his support of collectors over the years was legendary.
On behalf of IFPD, the officers and membership, our hearts and prayers go out to his family and friends.
Dr Bob, we miss you.

Checklist of Joyland Park Postcards by Hal Ottaway

Joyland Hillside Park, located at 2801 South Hillside, Wichita, was opened for business
on June 12, 1949, and the 75 foot high roller coaster was the focal point for the park from day one. This wood giant was designed by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company, of Hatfield, Pennsylvania. As far as I know this was the very first postcard that Joyland printed and it is a Curteich linen with number 9B774-N in the stamp box. This is a hard postcard to find in today’s market and I have only seen one on Ebay in years of shopping.

Al Newfer was the photographer and publisher for the next four Joyland postcards. The Park
Entrance, Swimming Pool, Woman and the Shoe, and another Pool picture looking toward the coaster.
In 1961 Kansas celebrated its Statehood Centennial (1861-1961), and Joyland built its own main street
with western store fronts and called it Joyland Park’s “Frontier Town.” Wichita photographer Don Eastman
took action pictures of the gunfighters inside the Silver Slipper Saloon, a moment of calm on the street, gunfight on the north side and the aftermath of the gunfight on the south side of Frontier Town.

Don Eastman made one more postcard, showing the interior of the Frontier Town General Store.
This was my store and you can see my cast iron still bank and toy collection along with 5 cent sticks of
candy and long twists of red and black licorice for sale. Here is where my friend from Wichita East High,
Bob Gates, worked with me that first summer of 1961. He is our Secretary of Defense today.

I know of at least two more Joyland postcards and these were published by a B & C Distributing Co of Haysville, Kansas. They were printed by McGrew Printing in Kansas City, Missouri. As far as I have been able to determine, I guess we might say that these were “pirates” or unauthorized postcards that someone published and sold on their own. There may be more by this same publisher and I would be pleased to know of any that you may have or discover. The two that I show here are of the Storybook Castle in Joyland’s Mother Goose Garden, and still another swimming pool view.

And too, I remember seeing in the collection of the Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum downtown at William and Main, at least one oversized or GIANT postcard showing the Old Woman and the Shoe image. There may be more of these big postcards too, so please watch for them
Except for the first postcard being a linen, all of the others are chrome finished and are in that status
of postcard collecting that some say are ”too new to be collected.” That is ha ha of course. The Joyland cards along with Kiddieland Sports Center and Frontier Land out west of Wichita, and even Wichita Cow Town, all of these venues are important to your Wichita collection, and all but Wichita Cow Town are closed, moved away and nearly forgotten except for these remaining postcard images.
As far as I know none of the Joyland postcards were ever reordered and reprinted. The linen postcard of the Roller Coaster is scarce though you might look for this in a Roller Coaster category with dealers. Amusement Park postcards are increasingly popular and the rest of the Joyland cards would easily be in this
dealer category. In the Al Newfer photographed grouping the postcard of the Big Shoe seems to be hard for me to find these days. The one postcard showing the cowboys in the Silver Slipper Saloon is perhaps the most
difficult to find in the Frontier Town group, and this would be followed by the General Store interior view too.
If others show up, I will be pleased to tell you about them in a future issue of the News.
This check listing of Joyland postcards was made because of several special requests, and it might be fun to go ahead and do something similar on Kiddieland Sports Center and Frontier Land too, and thereby have all of the Wichita amusement parks documented for collectors.

EBAY COP!!!! BETTER WATCH OUT....Better get those listings right....BETTER DO WHAT THEY TELL YA!!!
We asked for interesting eBay stories and got this in from Jim Mehrer...is it for real? Surely not...
Ever have an issue with shipping? Here is one solution....
Procedures for Negotiation of Shipping Charges
In response to the number of eBayers who have initiated negotiations concerning our shipping fees and methods, we have established the following procedures for the negotiation process. Successful bidders who wish to participate in negotiation will be required to follow these procedures.
If you would like to negotiate the shipping fees on your eBay lot:
1. Send your payment for the item ONLY. Do not include any shipping fees.
2. Include a legible, coherent handwritten letter explaining your opinions about our shipping methods and fees, and defining your counter-offer. Include all details regarding packing materials, containers, shipping methods, rates and carriers, as well as estimated time of preparation and transit. Be sure to offer hints concerning recycling; discount postage; office supplies stores' bankruptcy sales; sources for factory seconds on bubble wrap; comparative benefits of mailing from the United Nations building; and any other pertinent wisdom that you can share with us that might support your counter-offer.
3. IMPORTANT: To facilitate our reply, at the top of the first page of your request, draw a 1/2" by 1/2" square box with the words "proposal rejected" written next to it. If you wish, you may also draw a box with the words "proposal accepted" written next to it, although this is strictly optional and completely unnecessary.
4. Include a self-addressed stamped envelope for our reply.
5. Write the words "shipping counter-offer enclosed" and the eBay lot number on your envelope, so that your request can be forwarded directly to our Shipping Negotiation Committee (SNC).
On receipt of your partial payment and counter-offer, the SNC will carefully read your proposal and give it thorough consideration. This process takes an average of ten days. At that time, the SNC will put a check mark in the "proposal rejected" box on your request and return it to you in the self-addressed stamped envelope which you provided.
When you receive your rejection notice, send the amount of shipping which you were originally billed. Put the eBay lot number on your payment envelope.
If you elect to appeal the decision of the SNC, send your original proposal along with your appeal. Be sure to include any and all additional pertinent information, as well as irrelevant generalizations, personal insults, and threats. At the top of the first page of your appeal, draw a 1/2" by 1/2" square box with the words "appeal rejected" written next to it. Include a self-addressed stamped envelope for our reply. Write the words "SNC appeal enclosed" and the eBay lot number on your envelope. The appeal review process normally takes about thirty days. After reviewing your appeal, the Appeals Board of the SNC will put a check mark in the "appeal rejected" box on your request and return it to you in the self-addressed stamped envelope which you provided. The decision of the Shipping Negotiating Committee Appeals Board is final. When you receive your rejection notice, send the amount of shipping which you were originally billed. Put the eBay lot number on your payment envelope.
(ahhhhh....a bit of Jim Mehrer satire to lighten an otherwise cold and dreary day. What a wit, and he's probably just using half of it....thanks Jim)

Hello!
I am always looking for cards of my two favorite towns: Panama City, FL and St. Andrews, FL (a/k/a Saint Andrew, FL). I like all views and eras, but of course the older cards are most desirable! Also, a steamer ship called the Tarpon (which used to sail between Pensacola and Panama City) is another interest of mine. If you have any of these, please let me know and if you don't have any right now, I hope you'll keep me in mind in the future! Thanks so much!
