My Home Town...Penngrove, California

**************************************************************************************************************************
Here's an RP of downtown Penngrove, California, population <1000, taken in 1909. It looks pretty much the same today, although the building at the top of the hill is obscured by a neoclassical style bank built in the ’20s. The beer bar on the right with its curved wooden walkway is gone, and the shed like buildings above the funny shaped hotel were all given false fronts--in the 1920s, too. The baggage shed is gone. We haven't had a train come through in three or more years since the NWP went belly up, but they're working on the tracks, and we expect to hear a toot or two fairly soon. And, oh yes, the roads have been paved. Next year the yuppies will get their wish: sidewalks.
Best to you!
-Lew Baer

Food in the Atomic Age
The Curt Teich Postcard Archives, a division of the Lake County Discovery Museum, is North America’s largest public collection of postcards and materials relating to their creation. Part of the Lake County Discovery Museum’s mission is to present inspiring exhibits to the public, and what better way to do that than through postcards? The new exhibition, Food in the Atomic Age, which runs through February 21, 2010, features fun and fabulous postcards from the 1950s and ‘60s.
.
Image: Atomic Fireball 5CK1585, 1955
The phrase "Atomic Age" was coined in 1945 by William Laurence of the New York Times, who was the official journalist for the Manhattan Project. Americans were optimistic about all the possibilities nuclear technology held in store for them. Nuclear power plants were seen as clean energy that could supply the increased demand for electricity to postwar households.
As conveniences such as frozen food, plastic containers and a wealth of electric appliances created a streamlined, efficient American home, the term Atomic Age came to include all aspects of the modern 1950s lifestyle. Postcards advertised these attractive, new products to eager consumers.
Drive-Ins and Fast Food
By the 1950s, drive-in restaurants with their flashy architectural styles were beginning to replace the diners of the 1930s. America was on the move and in a hurry thanks to the automobile. Dining on the go became the supreme car culture convenience, and fast food restaurants became a staple of the American roadside.

Image: McDonald’s 1DK997, 1961.
Standardized menus replaced the homemade comfort food of the pre-war diner. McDonald’s restaurants employed the production-line technology of Henry Ford, nicknamed the Speedy Service System, as it streamlined food preparation and maintained consistency in its limited menu items. This uniform production kept the food hot, the service fast, and the prices low.
The Atomic Age Kitchen
After enduring rationing during the lean years of World War II, Americans were longing to enjoy life to the fullest again. Post-war prosperity allowed families to renovate kitchens and buy new appliances for the first time.

Image: Lyon Steel Cabinets D10797, 1955.
Kitchens of the 1950s relied heavily on electricity, which was an efficient power source for all the new gadgets available -- large refrigerators, stoves, and for a few lucky housewives dishwashers and microwaves.

Image: Supermarket 6CK2322, 1956.
Bountiful meals prepared with pre-packaged foods in state-of-the-art appliances became all the rage.

Image: Eggo Frozen Waffles 5CK766, 1955.
Swanson TV Dinners, Minute Rice, Ore-Ida Frozen Potatoes, and Eggo Frozen Waffles were introduced as quick meal options for the busy family.

Image: Swift’s Ice Milk 7CK261, 1957.
Companies were quick to create products and packaging to fill electric refrigerators and freezers. Swift’s Ice Cream developed a “special pak” allowing families to have ice cream on hand. The caption on the back of one advertising postcard for Swift’s reads: “Creamy-rich ice cream is the climax to good meals the year around.”
Food in the Atomic Age features more than 75 postcards along with period textiles and kitchen objects from the museum’s collections. The museum also presents Bringing the World Home, a permanent postcard exhibition, which features hundreds of postcards dating from the late 1800s to the present. For more information, visit the Curt Teich Postcard Archives website at www.TeichArchives.org.
Editors note: Thanks Chris, great to have an article, and as always, we enjoyed having you and staff at the Greater Chicago Postcard and Paper Shows this year. See you at the show in April...Jim
Lyn Knight Postcard and Paper Auction News
Fall 2009 Auction Results
Jim Taylor, Managing Director, Lyn Knight Postcard and Paper Auctions reports on their recently completed Fall 2009 Sale.
We have recently completed our Fall Auction, with good results, and an overall upswing in interest and sales from the previous two sales. A number of collectors and dealers were back bidding with us that we had missed in previous sales, and interest seemed to have definitely picked up, perhaps following the twists and turns of the U.S. economy.
Strengths in this sale seemed to be most easily seen in the better Linen advertising and topicals, with several cards bringing much more than their previous counterparts, suprising many Linen collectors, including those hoping to find a bargin or two amongst the rarieties. The "sell-through" on the better Real Photos seemed a bit down, probably because of some pretty aggressive minimums and reserves, but much of the material was wonderful, and if the collector was there, they bought it, paying near records for a number of the better cards. A large collection of Wain cats sold well, indicating a number of collectors both here and abroad for these great items. Hold to Light Santas, as well as the album collection of the David Grubbs consignment found new collector homes, with the Uncle Sam Santas being of special note. Box lots of state views, and sorted topics continued to sell well, near complete "sell-through" as in previous auctions as many internet and show sellers keep buying for inventory, and keep coming back to our sales as more material comes to market. Particular interest was placed on the material such as Grubbs collection, that was fresh, not having been offered in years as seen by the many 10 cent and 25 cent prices penciled in on back of the 'hot' topics of today. Great political, royalty and other topics sold well. Complete online catalog and prices realized are available online at www.lynknight.com.

Hospital Collection For Sale
How would you like to have a postcard picturing the hospital where you were born?
Well there is a possibility that I might have one in stock, as I recently purchased a collection of 6000 postcards going back to the year 1902. If I have your hospital the price is $5.00, postpaid. USA only.
Just drop an email to me at rgnpcs@optonline.net and give me the name of the hospital, and city where located. I will check and see if I have it, and let you know yes or no.

Hello!
I am always looking for cards of my two favorite towns: Panama City, FL and St. Andrews, FL (a/k/a Saint Andrew, FL). I like all views and eras, but of course the older cards are most desirable! Also, a steamer ship called the Tarpon (which used to sail between Pensacola and Panama City) is another interest of mine. If you have any of these, please let me know and if you don't have any right now, I hope you'll keep me in mind in the future! Thanks so much!
