Mini Report on the 32nd Wichita Show
Thanks to everyone who came to the 32nd Annual Wichita International Postcard Show this year. We had maybe, THE BEST TIME EVER together. Leon and Dolores Rowe from Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, make their annual trek to Wichita as their FAMILY VACATION and have been coming for many years. Keith Peterson, Lynn and Nick Farago all from California came to Wichita first and then went on to Lenexa, Kansas, (next door to Kansas City) for the exciting and successful Lyn Knight Auction following Wichita as part of their time away from home, and we were able to see each other there again, and enjoy additional visiting about postcards. And others stopped off at Lyn Knight’s auction house to view lots and leave bids and then went on home. Everyone who was not present at the auction itself were able to bid online. All of those wonderful postcards from DAVID GRUBBS’ COLLECTION (from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania), as well as many other important consignments too….it was amazing!
We had the usual feast of postcards at the Wichita Inn East motel starting right after Jim Taylor’s Joplin Postcard Show, with folks checking in and opening their doors for postcard business as early as Sunday and Monday, October 11 and 12, and more came every day. There was increased shuttling and bringing folks from the Wichita Airport that is on our west side, across town, and to the east side where the WIE and two other motels are located. Our Postcard Family of Friends is tremendous and Wichita is our annual Family Reunion.
The special tour of the Allen-Lamb Home that is the best Prairie Style Home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright was just fantastic. We were last there ten years ago, and since then we have had continual requests for another tour. Just ask anyone who attended and see how excited that person gets in telling you about the tour. We did this on Thursday afternoon.
At the Wichita Show this year we had a very special recreation of having your picture taken on a Paper Moon, so that it was made into a postcard with an AZO back, complete with the Wilson-Jones Studio imprint on the riverside too. Debbie Wilson and Brian Jones gave there time at the show so that everyone else might have such a special and spectacular keepsake from this year’s Wichita Show. These postcards were available in
sepia as well as full color. Sincere Thanks to Debbie and Brian for their picture taking and printing efforts and to my daughter in law Emily Ottaway and her class of theatre students for making us our friendly Paper Moon!! Take a look at this postcard showing yours truly with Tal Scott and Val Rose….we call this the Hal, Val, and Tal postcard.

And too, check out the back of the postcard too. Authentic in every way!
Rick and Deborah Geary were here all day Saturday to meet with collector friends, signing postcards and books, and fielding questions about a new personal postcard. Larry Fulton from Palm Springs, California created a limited edition Large Letter Linen postcard just for our Wichita Show this year. These were offered by Susan Lane along with many nice postcard books.
Saturday evening marked a very special time when club members who had purchased a reservation joined together at The Olive Tree Bistro for a splendid served dinner. We had the entire restaurant to ourselves and were babied and served, and it was up scale all the way. This was another eye opener about how we try to do things at the Wichita Show.
The Show Theme this year was Photographers and Their Postcards and on Sunday morning our speaker was Don Ulrich, and he gave a crackerjack presentation with his grandson Noah’s assistance. You just would not begin to believe all of the super duper advertising and real photo Photographer’s Studios and things that Don had in his program. It was soooo good. As our friend Don Nichol’s is fond of saying….seeing Don’s talk got everyone “lathered up” about this collecting topic. Many thanks to you Don for bringing along your postcard making camera and tripod as well as all of those
tremendous postcards you shared with us in your power point presentation. BRAVO.
We had quite a few new people attend the Wichita Show this year, and this is always good. It means that they were able to arrange their time away from home to come out to south central Kansas and see what all of this talk and fuss is about. We tried our best to show everyone a good time, and hundreds of thousands of postcards in all categories and price brackets. We had Tom Mulvaney’s new postcard book, Bozeman and the Gallatin Valley, and too we had Fred Tenney and Kevin Hilbert’s new book Large Letter Postcards: The Definitive Guide 1930s to 1950s….both new postcard books and they both debuted at the Wichita Show this year and all three authors were present and signed copies for collectors and friends.
We had everything that I have reported on and more, a Massage Therapist to rub and work tight necks and shoulders so that folks might return to looking and buying more postcards with renewed energy, we had Exhibits, Thirty-one Dealers from all over the nation at the show itself and still more who set up at the motels for the pre-show excitement. The Knights of Columbus served wonderful food, special lasagna and salad on Friday evening, a breakfast on Saturday, and bowls and bowls of their Famous Chili along with sandwiches, slices of pie and cake throughout Saturday and Sunday.
Make plans now, right away, to enjoy your postcard vacation to Joplin, Wichita, and Lenexa in 2010. Our venue has already been reserved and confirmed as October 16 and 17 for the general public and for club members only on Friday evening, October 15.
Join the Wichita Postcard Club and be included in all that we do as a club. Write me, Hal Ottaway at hottaway@cox.net Thanks Very Much.

Not only were the street car tracks front and center down Douglas Avenue in Wichita, Kansas, but by
1907 Wichita also had its own version of the Great White Way At Night as shown in the real photo postcard
above with all of the street lights ablaze. The printed version using this same image let it be know that
"Wichita is becoming known as the Electric City of the middle west. Be progreassive. Light up."

The 8th Annual Land of Lakes Antique & Postcard Show 2010
Feature Article by Morgan Rogan
The 8th Annual Land of Lakes Antique & Postcard Show will take place Friday, July 23rd (9am to 6pm) and Saturday, July 24th (10am to 4pm), 2010 at the Eagan Community Center located at 1501 Central Parkway, Eagan , Minnesota. More than 40 quality dealers from all over the country.......$4 admission --- good for both days
Fall may be in the air, but it’s not too early to think about the summer of 2010 and consider attending the 8th Annual Land of Lakes Antique Postcard & Paper Show. Located in Eagan, Minnesota, a suburb of Minneapolis and St. Paul, the show is considered one of the upper Midwest’s premier events and is the largest show of its kind in the Twin Cities.
The show will take place on Friday, July 23rd and Saturday, July 24th and with more than 40 dealers promises to be better and more exciting than ever. Over the years dealers have hailed from a wide range of states including Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Florida, Pennsylvania, New York, Michigan, Ohio, Missouri, Nebraska, Montana, Washington, California, Texas, Maryland, Connecticut, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nevada, Arkansas, Alabama, and more……Considered a terrific buying show, this is one event that seems to offer something for everyone from very advanced collectors --- to those beginner collectors just starting out.
The Eagan Community Center location is ideal since it is near more than a dozen motels and hotels in a wide price range as well as dozens of restaurants. Most of the motels offer free shuttle service to or from Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport in addition to complimentary shuttle service to the community center.
Anyone wishing to combine postcard collecting with their summer vacation will find a long list of activities to keep them busy including visiting one of the many beautiful lakes, taking a ride in a riverboat down the Mighty Mississippi or stopping by the legendary Minnehaha Falls. Others might enjoy a trip to the nearby Mystic Lake Casino, the Mall of America, the State Capitol in St. Paul or visiting the old milling district in Minneapolis. There are also several charming historic towns located within an easy drive of Eagan --- many filled with antique shops and even a few with postcards and other paper items. In short, a fun place for postcard collectors to spend a few days during the Summer of 2010………Hope to see you there.
Want more information ? Please contact Morgan Rogan at 860-319-4022 or at postcardlady@comcast.net .( Ed. note, a nice pic below of our good friends, Morgan and Tom, see you in York!)

Hello!
I am always looking for cards of my two favorite towns: Panama City, FL and St. Andrews, FL (a/k/a Saint Andrew, FL). I like all views and eras, but of course the older cards are most desirable! Also, a steamer ship called the Tarpon (which used to sail between Pensacola and Panama City) is another interest of mine. If you have any of these, please let me know and if you don't have any right now, I hope you'll keep me in mind in the future! Thanks so much!
