Father James Cox, his Blue Shirts, and the Jobless Party Convention

and March on Washington DC, 1932.

Jim Taylor

This great collection of historical labor/political movement real photos comes from the David Grubbs Collection of Pittsburgh PA. The central character in the story of the "Unemployed Party" of 1932 is its founder and leader, Father James Cox of Pittsburgh PA. His history of the begining the Unemployed Party and their pursuit of the politicians of the day to demand change to the horrible conditions and treatment of unemployed workers during the Great Depression provided his drive. He organized his followers, known as "Blue Shirts" and made the trip through Ohio and Pennsylvania to arrive in Washington DC and present his demands to his Congressmen on the steps of the Capital. They proceeded to Creve Coeur MO (St Louis) in the the summer of 1932 to organize his 'Jobless Party", and he became the party's Presidential candidate to run against (and be defeated by) Franklin Roosevelt.

His march and rally on Washington DC took place only months before the Bonus Expenditionary Force showed up and built their tents, only to be torn down as the veterans of WW I were summarily thrown out of the Capital and sent packing. This was a very troubling time in American history, and Father Cox and the"Blue Shirts" of his "Unemployed Party" or "Jobless Party" were a central part of the movements in and around the government espousing change for the common man.

This fantastic RPPC collection was assembled by David Grubbs, is complete as collected by Mr Grubbs, each card has 'liner notes' in ink on front for publication, and has photographer shutter settings, time of day, and other specs on back along with the photographers name Charles F Lemic, 214 Oregon St Corliss Sta. Pittsburgh PA.

All are AZO with squares. This would make an amazing contribution to museum or labor movement archive. The "Blue Shirt" rally in St Louis at the race track is fantastic, and when put all together this collection pretty well completes the history of Father Cox's "Jobless Party." About 24 images are from St Louis MO Raceway(Creve Coeur Jobless Party Convention),

20 are from Washington DC and the other 12 are from the route of the Party of the Unemployed.

The Washington DC rally dates of January 8 to 12, 1932 are documented, with peoples names, places, times, etc. A book could (and should) be published from the material in this lot. Condition is mostly EX with writing on front. A total of 56 different images are in this lot.

THE SHOW OF SHOWS....WORLD RENOWNED ".....if you can only get to one show this year......"

Wichita Postcard Club

THIS IS THE ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wichita International Postcard Club Show

Oct 16,17,18, 2009

Members from all over the world attend the Wichita International Postcard Club Show each 3rd weekend in October.

Imagine a building with hundreds of thousands of postcards! That's what we have every October here in Wichita, Kansas! 32+ dealers set up tables filled with boxes full of postcards all categorized and ready for you to search for that perfect addition to your collection.
Not a postcard collector? You may become one if you try our show! They also make great gifts! Wouldn't Grandma love to have a
postcard of her home town or the hospital where you were born?
History abounds in postcards - everything from political to aviation to geographical to ......
You may not know where to start! Think about what you're interested in - music, animals, sports, your favorite vacation spot, the hospital where you were born, presidents , World Fairs, cowboys - it could literally be anything and I would bet one of the dealers can come up with something related to your interest! There are modern (rack)cards as well as cards close to 100 years old. Dealers are friendly and anxious to help you!
The 32nd Wichita International Postcard Show will be held on October 16, 17, and 18, 2009 in All Saint's Gym, 3313 Grand, Wichita, Kansas (across the street from St Joseph's Hospital) - just north and east of Hillside and Harry in southeast Wichita. Friday night is for members only (a good reason to join!) at 6:30, with open availability to the general public on Saturday 9-5 and Sunday 10-4.
The show theme for 2009 will be real photos/photographers with the seminar presented by Don Ulrich.  Display boards will feature postcards relating to to the show theme as well as linens, advertising, people, signed artists, transportation, state views, political, novelty, topicals and miscellaneous.  Sunday includes Postcard Seminar at 8:30 am in the basement of the hall.
There is FREE admission, FREE parking, exhibits, and hundreds of thousands of postcards!

Accommodations

Many of the dealers that set up at our show stay at the Wichita
Inn located at 8220 East Kellogg in Wichita. Their toll free
phone # is 1-888-685-8291.  Local # is 685-8291.

Due to the Kellogg project, the Williamsburg Inn has been
demolished.  The Wichita Inn however has been updated.

Of course Wichita has MANY other motels including most
of the major chains and many smaller ones as well. Feel
free to contact us and we would be happy to help you out
in finding accommodations.

Food
Many of the restaurants that were available near the
Wichita Inn previously have been demolished due to
the Kellogg expansion project, but, good news, a

BRAND NEW Denny's located within easy walking distance just west of the Wichita Inn East has opened.

There are numerous restaurants on Rock Road north and south
of Kellogg.  At the show itself, you can't beat the food
served by the Knights of Columbus (9767). Their burgers
and chili are great! Their pie is especially popular
so be sure to get your piece(s)!
There are several fast food restaurants close to the show
if you want to take a quick break.

Don't forget the Frank Lloyd Wright home, .... for anyone coming in early to shop the motels, Plan for an hour or an hour and a half on Thursday afternoon the 15th at 2:00 pm at the home (255 N Roosevelt) just north of Douglas avenue and east of Hillside several blocks.
An opportunity for some "culture too". Gift shop will be open selling the postcards they have available for this FLW home after the house tour. We were here in 1999 when our show theme was architecture and by popular demand this special home tour was arranged for our Wichita Show Visitors. Dont miss it.

Coming Soon - And I Really Mean It This Time!

I am very pleased to announce that my long promised book "Route 66 Postcard Hall Of Fame" is nearing completion. After many delays the end is finally in sight. In fact, unless some really special cards surface at the Wichita Postcard Show in October, the book will go to final edit shortly after the show. With the kind assistance of MANY prominent collectors, I have rounded up images of some of the most incredible Route 66 postcards ever produced. The image shown below is just a sample! If you would like to receive a notice when the book is ready, send me an email at texaswally@mac.com. Also, if you're going to attend the Wichita show, I'll be at the Wichita Inn, room 216, beginning on Tuesday, October 13th. Come by and say howdy! As always, the candy and stories are free. Hope to see you there. Wally Chariton

Is The Time Right To Buy? We think it is, we've seen better material coming in for the sales, we've seen buyers coming back in to the shows we attend, we've seen more dealer activity, both buying and selling at the shows. At our April 17,18, Greater Chicago Postcard and Paper Show and Sale we saw nearly a doubling in dealer participation, and an increase in crowd as well. Our November show is filling now. With our goal of broadening the scope of the Greater Chicago show to other paper, and continuing to develop it into national show, we saw vendors bringing not only great postcard stocks from U.S., Europe, Canada, but also documents, trade cards, photos, stereo views, fanatstic art nouveau posters, postal history, almost anything vintage paper of collectible value, and to top it off, a fantastic display of original Wrigley Gum Wrappers, from the very beginnings of the company, a beautiful representation of the purely American icon of marketing and originality, not to mention a wonderful piece of Chicagoland history.

Is The Time Right To Sell? We are currently booking consignments for our Spring 2010 Postcard and Paper Sale, to be held May of 2010. Of particular interest are better collections, specialized material, real photo groupings, best of the best types of material are always welcome and have a place of honor in our sales and catalog. Large stocks, or accumulations are needed as well. Contact me at your convenience to discuss your holdings, we are preparing to make several buying/consigning trips around the U.S. in the next 3 months, and will travel to visit and discuss holdings of size and significance. We will be at the Joplin MO Oct 11; Wichita International Oct 17,18 to pick up or discuss future consignments.

We will also be traveling to Chicago Nov 16,17; York PA, in Nov, Orlando FL, in Jan; Phoenix AZ in Jan 2010, then Missouri and Texas in February and March. Please call or email now for an appointment.

Hello!
I am always looking for cards of my two favorite towns: Panama City, FL and St. Andrews, FL (a/k/a Saint Andrew, FL). I like all views and eras, but of course the older cards are most desirable! Also, a steamer ship called the Tarpon (which used to sail between Pensacola and Panama City) is another interest of mine. If you have any of these, please let me know and if you don't have any right now, I hope you'll keep me in mind in the future! Thanks so much!
