The Santa Fe Fiesta – Fred Harvey Series of Postcards
by Hal Ottaway, Wichita Kansasw
The next time you are in Santa Fe, New Mexico, go to the La Fonda at the SE corner of the Plaza and start looking around the supporting posts inside the lobby area. Walk all around each post and you will soon be seeing the original paintings by Gerald Cassidy, one of the local regional artists who in an earlier day made Santa Fe his home. These paintings are big….”taller than a yardstick”.. is how one friend described them…and you will really enjoy seeing them up close and then start looking for them in postcard form too.
It seems that in 1922 Fred Harvey published a series of ten postcards and sold them in a fine illustrated wrapper/envelope. The postcards all have their “H” or Harvey numbers and they are as follows
.

H-2913 The Buffalo Dance;H-2914 A Franciscan Friar; H-2915 Spanish Dancer; H-2916 The Eagle Dance; H-2917 Santiago; H2918 Kit Carson, Pathfinder; H-2919 Los Matachines Dancer;
H-2920 The Giant Messenger; H-2921 A Navajo; and H-2922 Entry of De Vargas . All ten of these constitute The Santa Fe Fiesta series by Fred Harvey.
Friends who are Fred Harvey specialists tell me that there are actually two sets, one with the printing in blue on the reverse side, and the other set of ten with green printing. They are all great postcards and worthy for you to look for and enjoy.
I have recently started a mini collection of the empty Fred Harvey wrappers or envelopes since most of these seem to be illustrated and are attractive too. A big THANK YOU to Tal and Val Scott of Nixa, Missouri, for this wrapper for my set of postcards!!
Ed. note; Thanks Hal for sharing some of your great Harveys with us. See you at Tulsa Postcard Show in May.

Empie Kartoon Kards are one of the first copyrights for western cartoon postcards. Arizona's territorial native Hal Empie originated these designs during the 1930's in Duncan, Arizona.
You will recognize drawings by Hal Empie's H. EMPIE stick signature. They appeared as early as 1938 in such publications as Arizona Highways. Before Mr. Empie elected to devote his love of art full time to oil painting, his famous kartoon kards had become an Arizona legend with wholesale postcard accounts in 38 states and selling throughout the world for over 40 years. The originals are preserved in permanent archives including the Tiech Postcard Museum and the Museum of National HIstory, postcard collection Smithsonian.
Mr. Empie's daughter Ann Groves is collecting the orginal printings for a book. The family collection of the cards was lost in a flood of the Gila River. There are re-prints of the cards, they will have the paragraph on the backs, but are printed on the same 12pt. Krome Kote as the original printings of the 30's. It is important to note for collectors that in addition to cartoon western subjects there are hospital ones including Mayo Clinic, National Parks and several military. Often you will see a design that "Buy Bonz" added.......there are over 250 designs that we know of.
For questions and more info you may contact Ann at halempiestudio-gallery.com
www.halempiestudio-gallery.com
www.theartistsdaughter.com#
We are actively seeking to buy and consign original works by Hal Empie. We are also looking for his postcards, Empie Kartoon Kards.

And for our Friends from Holland.
Dave Essing of Bendav Postcards in the Netherlands, SUPER glad to have you and your friend at the Springfield MO show in March, hope you all can come back.
(Ed. note: for Ron from Holland......and all this time you told us you were the only postcard dealer in Holland......shame on you!)

Upcoming Route 66 St. Louis cookbook by Norma Maret Bolin
First- time author Norma Maret Bolin has written The Route 66 St. Louis Cookbook: The Mother Lode of Recipes from the Mother Road, which features over 150 recipes from over 115 restaurants and commercial establishments. The cookbook features vintage postcards, ads, menus and matchcovers to help tell the story.
With the recipes spanning many decades, this is a unique trip back to the tastes of yesteryear including Miss Hulling’s Autumn Glow Cake, the Forum’s Apple Pie, Pope’s Nut Torte, Famous-Barr’s French Onion Soup, Pietro’s Spinach Balls, Bevo Mill’s Biscuits, Grone Cafeteria’s Orange Fluff Cake, Dillard’s Garden Room’s Navy Bean Soup, the House of Maret’s Austrian Cabbage, Lombardo’s Famous Green Noodles, Henry VIII Shrimp Scampi, Schneithorst’s Potato Pancakes, the Spencer’s Grill Slinger, Howard Johnson’s/Layton’s Meatloaf, the Sites Station Café’s Chili, Red Cedar Inn’s French Dressing, the Diamonds’ Bread Pudding, and Key’s Twin Bridge Café’s Concord Grape Pie. The St. Louis Institutions section includes recipes from Busch’s Grove, Lemp Mansion, Al Baker’s, Ed’s White Front, Wright City Big Boy’s, Noah’s Ark, and Ruggeri’s. The Missouri section features the Blue Owl, Lewis Café, Meramec Caverns, Zeno’s, and Granny Shaffer’s while the Illinois section features Pere Marquette Lodge, Ariston Café, Dixie Truckers Home, Dell Rhea’s, White Fence Farm and Lou Mitchell’s. Grocery stores, bakeries, St. Louis favorite foods, and restaurants that have come along in more recent years are also featured as are those that have stood the test of time such as Tony’s, Al’s and Kemoll’s.

Lyn Knight Postcard and Paper Auctions is now producing Greater Chicago Postcard and Paper Shows
The Greater Chicago Postcard and Paper Show coming in April promises to bring a new look to both dealers and collectors. Lyn Knight Auctions of Lenexa Kansas has acquired the bi-annual shows produced by Susan Brown Nicholson. Jim Taylor, Managing Director of Lyn Knight Postcard and Paper Auctions, and owner of Courthouse Square Antique Cards, Neosho, MO., will manage the shows. Susan will remain as a vendor and says she is looking forward to enjoying the shows at a more leisurely pace than the hectic days of producing she has had to do in the past.
The same great venue, Engineers Hall, 6200 Joliet Rd, Countryside IL will serve and according to Lyn Knight, "the same great shows of the past will be supplemented with an expansion into other paper collectibles, including graphically oriented turn of the century posters and prints, documents, stocks and more. If it is vintage paper, if it is collectible, and has value, we hope to have vendors selling, and buying and exhibiting it throughout the room." Plans include new postcard and poster displays, and utilization of the stage area for a special poster-art presentation. This will be an 11,000 square foot show area, with upwards of 100 tables of paper collectibles for the 2 day event. The Chicago area's own Lake County Discovery Museum/Curt Teich Archive will be exhibiting in addition to vendors from all over the U.S. and several from Europe and Canada. Free appraisals, and free postcard collector information both from publications and from the vendors will be available. If you have early paper collectibles and would like to sell or have an appraisal(time permitting) this is a great opportunity to find out what you have. There will be a 'Sneak Peek" at some of the highlight lots from the May 2009 Spring Lyn Knight Postcard and Paper Auction on exhibit, and consignments will be accepted for the Fall 2009 auction as well.

Lyn Knight says, "We hope to frame this as a National Postcard Show right here in Chicago, central to the rest of the U.S., with easy access by air, or car, with several hundred hotel rooms across the street. We are adding a new dimension to a long-running show with a rich tradition of great postcards, dealers, and collectors. The postcard collecting stories from Susan's Chicago shows are legend, and we look forward to adding to that legend in developing this as a National Postcard Show with the help of all our great dealers and collector friends from around the world." The show will be held Friday April 17, 9a-6p, and Saturday April 18, 9a-4p, admission is $5 for both days. The Fall show dates are Nov 6,7.

The Knight Live system will display each lot in simultaneous time as the live floor auction and allow users to bid on the current lot and also leave proxy bids on future lots in the auction. For Knight Live's debut, we held our first live "soft opening" auction on Monday, February 16th. The auction featured World Bank Notes, Large and Small Size Type Notes, Nationals and Postcards, including linens and printed postcards from the Curt Teich archives in addition to real photo postcards and specialized cards. Since then our large CPMX auction in Chicago(Currency Auction) was also carried on Knight Live, with great success. Hello!
I am always looking for cards of my two favorite towns: Panama City, FL and St. Andrews, FL (a/k/a Saint Andrew, FL). I like all views and eras, but of course the older cards are most desirable! Also, a steamer ship called the Tarpon (which used to sail between Pensacola and Panama City) is another interest of mine. If you have any of these, please let me know and if you don't have any right now, I hope you'll keep me in mind in the future! Thanks so much!
