An Introduction to U.S. Navy Ship Postcards

By Earl Boyer
Since the first “Souvenir Cards” made their appearance in the 1890’s, U.S. Navy ships have appeared on postcards.
Interest in American naval ships grew during the Spanish American War, followed a few years later by President Teddy Roosevelt sending the Battleships of the Great White Fleet around the world. Many publishers printed images of these white and tan steel monsters. The Battleship was King of the seas, and as such most of the early postcards carried scenes of the Battleship. Battleship postcards of the early 20th Century up to World War II are quite common and a sizable collection can be put together of just the Battleship.
During World War II, late 1930’s photos of naval ships were used on both linen and real photo postcards. Many different ship types can be found today quite easily. When first printed they were sold in larger cities and at U.S. Naval Bases. Shortly after World War II, many ships started to carry postcards in their ship’s stores. These cards were used by crew members to write home or to give to a friend. Some of the larger ships like Aircraft Carriers and Battleships were able to print their own postcards aboard ship. They are scarce today and prized by collectors. Smaller ships had to buy them from postcard publishers. A real find is getting a postcard that was mailed aboard ship and carries the ship’s postal cancel.
During the 1950’s and 1960’s, the Navy increased in size. With the larger Navy came a greater number of ship postcards. The majority of ships on the west coast purchased cards from west coast publishers and east coast ships publishers in their area. Today, postcards are still ordered by the Supply Officer on Navy ships and sold through their ship’s stores, however most are now the larger Continental 4” x 6” size.
Publishers of color chrome postcards required the ships to purchase a certain quantity before they would print and issue a postcard. Due to this, many of the ships with small crews never ordered postcards. Real photo cards can be found of some of these small ships as these could be had in smaller quantities.
Popularity of Navy postcard collecting has increased over the last few years. Many Navy veterans start out buying a postcard of the ship they served aboard and end up getting hooked. I for one fall into this category. Collections can be assembled by collecting all of the different cards you can find of one ship that you or a family member served aboard, one class or type of ship, one each of every different ship available, or every Navy ship postcard you can find. It is a collection that never ends. New ships joining the fleet and constantly finding older cards that haven’t been seen before will always add to the challenge of collecting. A sizable collection of newer postcards (1950’s-2000’s) can be put together at a very reasonable price.
Welcome aboard!
Earl Boyer

Amarillo Texas Postcard Collector
Ron Smith
I have been an avid postcard collector for over 20 years collecting mostly postcards of Amarillo, Texas and the towns around the area. I only collect postcards that are of the standard size postcard and not the newer, larger continental postcards. I am always looking for postcards of Amarillo and especially postcards that I don’t have and the really great linen and old real photo postcards. The town name of Amarillo was spelled, and misspelled, several different ways thru the years. It has been spelled – Amarillo, Amarilla, Amorillo and even Amarylla. I am working on getting even more postcards together so I can include them in a postcard book of Amarillo, Texas.

This is a brief history of Amarillo - Amarillo was actually founded twice. Originally founded by J. T. Berry in April 1887 and named Oneida. Then on June 19, 1888 Henry B. Sanborn began buying land a mile east to move Amarillo to. Sanborn is known as the father of Amarillo. Sanborn claimed the original town site was on low grounds and would be susceptible to flooding during rain storms. In 1889 heavy rains almost flooded the original town site and prompted more residents to move to Sanborn’s new location. Around 1890 the railroads made there way in to town. In the late 1890’s Amarillo had become one of the world’s busiest cattle shipping points and caused the population to grow significantly. The population grew in people also, not just in cattle.

Routes 60, 66, 87 and 287 merged at Amarillo making Amarillo a major tourist stop having numerous hotels, tourist camps, motels, restaurants and curio shops.

Amarillo was once the self proclaimed helium capital of the world for having one of the country’s most productive helium fields. Amarillo’s economy continues to thrive on cattle along with agriculture, oil and natural gas. It is the largest city in the Texas Panhandle.
We always want to buy old postcards of Amarillo, Texas and the area towns. Please email me for more information or questions. Ron. RSMITH@ARN.NET
Ed. Note: Thanks Ron for the Amarillo collection update. We always look forward to seeing you at our Texas shows, and hope to see you at Dallas or Austin next month. By-the-way...for all you Route 66 experts, note the real photo of O.K. Dunlap (above) Grande Court Amarillo TX......yep, he's the same guy that did the famous Rt 66 Mechanical Linen that TexasWally, and everyone gets so excited about. This real photo was the model used for the mechanical.
Delores Hanney describes herself as a “historyteller.” she writes about the dreamers and schemers who defined Southern California from its mission days to the 1940s, decorating everything with some of the lovely old postcards from her collection. Her book, Venice, California: A Centennial Commemorative in Postcards was published by the Center for American Places and her work is found regularly in Barr’s Postcard News.
Now Hanney has created a website! “Mabel in Paradise: A Southern California Journal in Vintage Postcards” masquerades as an album assembled by silent screen star Mabel Normand, additionally embellished with pictures of Mabel and “her” comments on the California experience, 1912-1930. As Hanney explains in the backstory, the Southern California Mabel knew was, “reclining by the sea at the left edge of the continent — part Oz, part Alice’s wonderland — basking in golden sunlight.”
“Mabel in Paradise” is an accurate peek at how it was then, with just a little flourish of fancy. Here’s the link:

Lyn Knight Postcard and Paper Auctions is now producing Greater Chicago Postcard and Paper Shows
The Greater Chicago Postcard and Paper Show coming in April promises to bring a new look to both dealers and collectors. Lyn Knight Auctions of Lenexa Kansas has acquired the bi-annual shows produced by Susan Brown Nicholson. Jim Taylor, Managing Director of Lyn Knight Postcard and Paper Auctions, and owner of Courthouse Square Antique Cards, Neosho, MO., will manage the shows. Susan will remain as a vendor and says she is looking forward to enjoying the shows at a more leisurely pace than the hectic days of producing she has had to do in the past.
The same great venue, Engineers Hall, 6200 Joliet Rd, Countryside IL will serve and according to Lyn Knight, "the same great shows of the past will be supplemented with an expansion into other paper collectibles, including graphically oriented turn of the century posters and prints, documents, stocks and more. If it is vintage paper, if it is collectible, and has value, we hope to have vendors selling, and buying and exhibiting it throughout the room." Plans include new postcard and poster displays, and utilization of the stage area for a special poster-art presentation. This will be an 11,000 square foot show area, with upwards of 100 tables of paper collectibles for the 2 day event. The Chicago area's own Lake County Discovery Museum/Curt Teich Archive will be exhibiting in addition to vendors from all over the U.S. and several from Europe. Free appraisals, and free postcard collector information both from publications and from the vendors will be available. If you have early paper collectibles and would like to sell or have an appraisal(time permitting) this is a great opportunity to find out what you have. There will be a 'Sneak Peek" at some of the highlight lots from the May 2009 Spring Lyn Knight Postcard and Paper Auction on exhibit, and consignments will be accepted for the Fall 2009 auction as well.

Lyn Knight says, "We hope to frame this as a National Postcard Show right here in Chicago, central to the rest of the U.S., with easy access by air, or car, with several hundred hotel rooms across the street. We are adding a new dimension to a long-running show with a rich tradition of great postcards, dealers, and collectors. The postcard collecting stories from Susan's Chicago shows are legend, and we look forward to adding to that legend in developing this as a National Postcard Show with the help of all our great dealers and collector friends from around the world." The show will be held Friday April 17, 9a-6p, and Saturday April 18, 9a-4p, admission is $5 for both days. The Fall show dates are Nov 6,7.
