FEATURED ARTICLE: A New Book on Montana Postcards by Tom Mulvaney: A Review by Hal Ottaway

Check out Tom Mulvaney's NEW POSTCARD BOOK…

”HELENA” by Tom Mulvaney

A Review by Hal Ottaway

This new book is published in the Postcard History Series by Arcadia Publishing and is one that our longtime friend Tom Mulvaney from East Helena, Montana, has written. Tom is no stranger to Wichita Postcard Club members who have been coming to the club's annual show, and Joplin Missouri postcard show, and it seems that he has been here for almost all of the shows during the past twenty years.

He starts the book out with three block-buster, real-photo postcards that show the interiors of saloons in Helena. This is gold-mining country, and the main street, known as Last Chance Gulch, is where gold was discovered in 1864. You will find superb street scenes, parades, advertising, schools, churches, and so forth. The town had a bad earthquake in 1935, and that is also well documented on the postcard views. Another personal favorite is the section on personalities, such as Gary Cooper, who was born there, and Jeannette Rankin, who won election and became the first Congresswoman. Photographers of the postcards are noted, when known.

I promise that you will enjoy having this book, and Tom says that he will inscribe and autograph copies per your instructions. Send Tom a check for $22.00, tell him how you want it signed, and he will then mail it to you and take care of shipping costs himself. Write to Tom Mulvaney,
PO Box 1772, E Helena, MT 59635-1772.

Congratulations Tom on a job well done! We wish you much success!

Ed. Note: Merry Christmas to our friends Tom and Jill, ......Jim

Letter to the Editor: The Beginnings of National Postcard Week from our good friend and friend of the hobby Richard Novick

Jim,
Sending to you my notes, as I copied them, from my files of IFPD Newsletters.
It took awhile, but was fun reading about the different things that the IFPD was involved in.
I doubt that if it weren't for the IFPD, we might never have had a NPW.
Did you know that John McClintock basically ran the IFPD, and he never owned a computer.
Everything was either done by typewriter, or that old thing called a pen.

NATIONAL POSTCARD WEEK

3-1-83 1st mention in IFPD Newsletter

“for the past year we have been working on a Postcard Day, Week, or Month
DeeDee Parker of Westlake, OH accepted the task of correlating the thoughts of postcard collectors & dealers on the matter.”
It was DeeDee’s original suggestion to do this, along with John McClintock
I sat in on those early meetings discussing what we should do, and most of us thought that the first weekend in May would be most practicable, with the approach of the nice weather.
We discussed having as many people from the IFPD contacting their clubs, and discussing making postcards for the event. Everyone was very enthusiastic about this, and things moved rapidly.
Nov 1983 Newsletter: National Postcard Week will be held May 6-12, 1984. Two clubs said they would publish a postcard for the event, and several collectors as well. It was suggested that the dealers could make up cards and use them as advertising, as your name will be out there for many years to come,
I immediately went to work, and had my 1984 card made, showing me with the various funny hats that I would wear at the shows.
Dec 31, 1983 IFPD Newsletter mentions that “more reports have come in that clubs and private people will have postcards made for this gala week.”
Newsletter Sep 1984. “NPW was discussed, and it was agreed that it promoted the hobby in that it brought it to the attention of many people that were not aware of deltiology.”
Don Hart agreed to work toward getting the State of New Jersey to issue a proclamation for NPW 1985.
Although there was no additional information on the proclamation in the newsletters, I do know that a proclamation was obtained.
The IFPD Board Members that were mainly involved with organizing the first National Postcard Week were: Roy Cox, Charles Evans, John McClintock, Mary Martin, James Morrison, Richard Novick, and Frank Ryan. There were others, not board members that put in their ideas. Per Richard Novick Dec 2

Ed. note: Thanks Richard, I hope that someone is keeping track of the history of the hobby. You are a wealth of knowledge, thanks again for the NPCW information.

The Latest News from European Shows...from our World Traveler,

Ron from Holland

Dear Courthouse Square Readers,

Recession in Europe also hurts the shows but still..........!!!!!!

November 11 was the Brussels Postcard Show with approx. 60 dealers from Belgium, Holland, France and Germany. An international show. This show is held twice a year and because Brussels is an easy place to get to, the shows are always crowded. Despite the recession, NO RECESSION at this show. Like the old days, a lot of traffic and dealing and new faces of dealers from.......Russia and the Baltics. With 3 words in English they pretty well know you to explain their wantlist and in many cases they need almost everything. Besides that, money also talks and with these 2 languages you can not go wrong. Brussels is a show like the shows used to be, vibrant.
November 22-23 was the big Collectors Show in Utrecht, Holland, with all kind of collectables (1500 plus dealers) with also 30 postcards dealers. And again we saw a good crowd through the door and active dealing, better than thought, and again some foreign buyers from the UK, Japan, USA, Russia. It was noticed that the Russian dealers have a favourite price range for postcards between $5-15 and that there is no limit to their spending. Are the Russians helping us through the recession??? At least they did for a few dealers.
Next trip was to Germany for the Stuttgart show. A fine hall with 80 plus dealers, mostly from Germany but.......Stuttgart is like Detroit. All manufactorers have plants here and the recession hits hard in Stuttgart. It were the Polish, Russian, Czech and Balkan dealers who were the most active. The show opens for the public at 10 but at 14.00 the first dealers started packing to be on the road by 15.00. We have to wait for better times in this area, I am afraid.
The following day Cologne was on the list. A show with also 80 plus dealers and many out the area of the Ruhr. A good crowd came through the door when it opened for the public at 11.00 !!!!! and activity went to 16.00. This is a show with a greater variety of dealers, like Danish and English, together with Dutch and French.
A big section was for Stade Auktion House to promote his next sale. Talking with Daniel Stade he was willing to give me some key figures like his best sale this year was an impressive 900.000 Euro (U$ 1.200.000), a rare Arthur Thiele cat postcard Euro 860 (U$ 1200), a rare mountain face of Hansen Euro 550 (U$ 800) and a new record for a postcard.....!!!!!!! Bauhaus no.5 by Paul Klee brought Euro 22.000 or U$ 30.000 !!!!!!
Now you want to know where did that card go to?????? TO RUSSIA !!!!
Maybe you like to see what he is selling or maybe your next Bauhaus card comes from there (if you can beat the Russians ofcourse). His site is www.stade-auktionen.de
and they are situated in Wheil am Rhein, Germany.
And for the rest of the show, a well organized and fine meeting in the hands of Michael Warning.
In a couple of weeks some more show news from France and Holland.
Happy Holidays to you all.
Ron de Bijl
