31st Annual Wichita Internatinal Postcard Show.....Hal Ottaway
31st Wichita Postcard Club Show in Wichita, Kansas
October 18-19, 2008
An Article by Hal Ottaway
...all of the pictures are from Debbie Wilson, of Austin TX, who was good enough to document the show from start to finish for us.
It seems like yesterday, thirty-one years ago, when we had our first Wichita Postcard Club Show at the old Ramada Inn on east Kellogg .

This is a postcard showing the Ramada Inn in east Wichita. It has been razed and another motel is in its place today.
There we were in the basement, or maybe we called it the “lower level”, but we knew from that first show that there was indeed interest in having a postcard show in Wichita and that dealers would come and collectors would also come to Wichita. Up until then we had only two or three local antique shops who had a box of postcards, and we had maybe one or two annual antique shows, and there if we were lucky there were a few dealers who had a shoe box of postcards under their tables. Wichita collectors were hungry for postcards and the idea of an annual club sponsored postcard show seemed like the best thing to do. We would
have folks bring postcards to Wichita, and nothing would be more glorious.
We outgrew the Ramada Inn that first year and then moved to the All Saint’s School Gymnasium across the street from St Joseph’s Hospital, just north and east from Hillside and Harry streets. The All Saint’s Church has adopted us through the years and we have employed their young men to set up tables, assist dealers moving in and then help them to move out when the show is over and take down the tables and spruce everything up for school to resume on Monday. Through the years these young men have grown up and today some are engineers and medical doctors. There have been some years when they would return with buddies from their fraternities to help. Older brothers have turned over their worker place to younger brothers, and the tradition continues. The Knights of Columbus has provided the most wonderful food from their kitchen window. Their bowls of chili is top of the list of all time favorites. Wally Chariton from Plano, Texas, always buys tubs of the chili to take back to Texas with him. Can you imagine that? It is true. And they have the best pies and sandwiches and everyone is friendly. Dealers are waited on and food delivered to their booth if they are unable to get away to order and pick up their food. This “service” continues year after year. Where there once was soda and coffee available on Friday night, now they offer a
special lasagna dinne
r and tossed salad too.
Before the Wichita Show even starts there is an exodus to Joplin, Missouri, for participation in Jim Taylor’s postcard show there, and this year it was his 12th Annual Joplin Missouri Antique Postcard & Paper Americana Show and Sale. Jim moved it to a really swell new venue this year and it was better than ever with improved lighting, dealer space, and everything was first rate. Some of the dealers make the Joplin show on their way to Wichita for buying and selling and in other cases they come just to buy. So this adds to the postcard experience if you come out our way and choose to join us for this incredible string of days of postcarding.
Going out to eat with friends is always fun at Joplin and at any show. There are lots of big stories to hear and share and it is just good fun being with postcard buddies.
When Joplin closes, folks tend to make their way on to Wichita, mostly via Highway 400 that runs through the southern extension of the Flint Hills. The fall time of the year is especially a nice time to see the color change of the sumac and trees along ponds and creeks. This year Tom Mulvaney from East Helena, Montana, had gone to Joplin with me, and Ove Braskerud from Connecticut came along too. Ove stayed over in Joplin to help Jim Taylor get repacked, and Tom and I drove back to Wichita on Saturday evening after the Joplin show closed. Our
route back home usually takes us through Parsons, Kansas, for a stop for peppermint ice cream cones at Braums. Just one of those traditions that we generally do.
Tom Mulvaney checked into his first floor room at the Wichita Inn East, reserved from the year before, and by coming early and staying through the show, Tom is eligible for their special weekly rate. That works out well. I checked in with Tom the next morning and we went out for breakfast and then hurried back to start looking at postcards. Ralph Bowman (California) and John Butler (Nevada) were already set up in their respective rooms. That was early Sunday morning and all through each day that follows new folks check into the motel. Unsually someone who has postcards to sell will make up a sign and add it to the door on each floor and this makes it easy for everyone to find you. If your room door is open and postcards are on tables and the beds, then it is a sure sign that the occupants are open for business. This is called room hopping. Depending on the material and your own interest you may stay in place for hours or hop on to the next room.
This goes on for days and nights all through the week. People open their rooms and then might shut the door and go shop too, or go to Hewitt’s in downtown Wichita for antique and postcard shopping, or drive to see some of our museums, homes, Halloween displays, or just shop in malls or stores. Meal times are generally spent together with other postcard friends. Favorite places are returned to each year, adding to the pleasure and excitement with everyone who show up throughout the week. They come from far corners of the country, and quite a few try to come every year. Everyone is made to feel welcome, and we pass out maps of the city, make lists of nearby restaurants, and help wherever possible. One year Bill Petersen had a critical emergency dental problem, and as luck would have it, I was able to get him into see my dentist that very day and got him fixed up.

Val Rose is seen checking out the signs on the second floor at the Wichita Inn East and you can bet that very soon she was zeroed in on someone who had just opened for business. Tal and Val come every year from Nixa, Missouri, and they are organized and shall we say….”focused.”
On Friday about noon, those dealers who will be in the Wichita Show start gathering this up, and loading their things to make it to the All Saint’s School Gymnasium later in the afternoon. We have to wait until school is out, but soon thereafter our tables are in place….always organized by Bernd Frazier who teaches math in the real world, and who dashes to the show venue as soon as his school is out too. Bernd adjusts the tables and makes sure there is room for the dealer behind the table and traffic in front. The dealers are then permitted to unload and bring their stock inside. We open the show to members only on Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. Since this is a club show we ask participating dealers not to shop each other on the floor ahead of our members. The dealers get their own stock in order and at 6:30 the door opens and everyone files inside and starts HAVING MORE FUN. Outside at the registration table our Vice President Zoe Marie Head and her assistant Nancy Stratton have registered everyone, made sure they are members, collected dues, and generally welcomed them to the show.

The dealers and club officers all wear name tags that have been assembled by Margaret and Gilbert Pittman. They know most everyone and renew friendships that they have made through the years not only at our show but at many other shows throughout the nation too. Everyone knows the Pittmans.
This year we did something new and that was to offer the services of Nola Bergman who just happens to be a Massage Therapist. Her business card reads,
“Have Table-Will Travel” and it does and she does too. For our postcard show, Nola brought her special massage chair and off to the side of the registration table she gave wonderful, really great neck and shoulder massages. She charged $1.00 a minute and the times ranged from five to ten minutes. I tried out the ten minute one and it was marvelous. I loved it. Oh man, it was nice. This renewed me and got me back into action right away….looking at more postcards.

Special thanks to Nola and to her Mother, Zoe Marie Head for arranging all of this and we are thrilled to announce here that Nola has promised to return next year for both the Saturday and Sunday of the show. Do plan on reserving your time with Nola.
Rick Geary was at our show again this year, coming with his wife Deborah from Carrizozo, New Mexico. Rick was kept busy autographing books, comic books, and yes, lots of postcards too. He posed for numerous pictures and talked with potential customers about creating a special postcard for them too. William Drews from Hutchinson, Kansas, was there with his new personal postcard that shows off Bill’s Beemobile. Everyone loves the new postcard and Bill simply beems.

Club treasurer Phil McDaniels took good care of our display of exhibit boards and club members put together really fine displays of postcards from their collection.
The show theme and a range of other categories gave everyone a place to show and compete. A listing of winners was in the November issue of the Wichita Postcard Club News.

On Sunday morning at 8:30 we had our Postcard Seminar and since this year’s show theme was Wichita Postcards, we decided to do a presentation around this topic. Club president Beverly Henline and yours truly did the honors and had a big time showing off and telling about various Wichita postcards. Beverly started with the earliest sets and showed newspaper advertising that told of their availability in about 1905. Granted, 8:30 is a tad early to get up and at em for a postcard talk, but
by half way through, the seating area had filled out and everyone stayed awake and
learned, enjoyed, and seemed to have a good time.
The show came to a close at 4:00 pm on Sunday, allowing the out of towners to get on the road and get at least part way back home.
Others were on their way to Lenexa, Kansas and were anxious to view postcards that were included in the Lyn Knight Postcard Auction….their Fall Postcard Sale. There would be two full days for viewing and the three day auction started on Wednesday morning after the Wichita show closed. Dealers and collectors alike were eager to see the postcards in the various lots that they had been tempted first by seeing online and on the pages of the thick and juicy Lyn Knight Postcard Auction catalog. More fun just ahead, more postcard meals with friends, still more big talk and tales. Being together is what its all about. We hope to see you in our area next fall…first for Joplin, then the motel week, then the Wichita Show, and then another spectacular auction in Lenexa, Kansas. Start resting up now. Thanks for coming.
Ed. note: Thanks Hal for the great article, and Ms Debbie Wilson for the great photos. See you all next year for number 32.
