FEATURED ARTICLE: From our good friend and fellow collector, Dr Tom Garnhart.

Comic Cards of WWII

(copyright, Tom Garnhart)

An article by Tom Garnhart, author of

COMIC POSTCARDS OF WWII(Thomas O. Garnhart)(c)

Black and white in France
The French publisher Editions “I’Indispensable” of 12, Rue de Valenciennes, Paris published a fascinating series celebrating the liberation of Paris by American Forces. Until recently, I’d seen only one of these cards, but now have come across the entire series of six. The publisher has called them: “Collection ‘Welcome’ Les Americans en France.” The artist is C. Dutrioc.
Each of these cards depict Americans in a positive light. One of the most fascinating features of this series is that two cards clearly depict black GI’s in a flattering manner. This is quite a contrast to most of the cards published in the US at the same time that stereotyped and demeaned the black American.
One of the great joys of postcard collecting, as contrasted to the coin and stamp hobbies, is that there remain many undiscovered “treasures” out there. There are definitive lists of coins minted, stamps issued. Surprises are extremely rare. But with postcards, one never knows what has not yet been documented or discovered by other collectors. Thus my listing of WWII comic postcards keeps growing!

Auction News from Lyn Knight Postcard Auctions:
Here is the latest on the upcoming May auction to be held online and at Lyn Knight Auctions in Lenexa KS.

The May auction is online and ready for you to register and bid. The catalogs have shipped, and are shipping daily. It is not too late to order your catalog.

Those of us in the Lyn Knight Auction family have been hard at work putting together this great auction. Our auction couldn't take place a lot of effort of a whole group of people. Just to mention two, our auction couldn't be put together without communications, and as many of your know, our 'communicator' is Cheri, who takes all our calls(and most of yours), manages lot viewing, and helps with cataloging. Our fellow postcard dealer and collector, Jeff Eischen from Omaha NE, was instrumental in cataloging much of the material in this sale. Everyone has worked with timelines, schedules, and many were working on currency auctions or other events at the same time, all taking hours and hours of effort. This catalog is the results of that effort, we hope you enjoy it, and enjoy the sale. Highlights of the sale include a total of 1700 plus RPPC lots, over 1000 Halloween, hundreds of Santas, and a large Black Americana collection lot. Beautiful signed artist cards, Mucha, Kirchner, Schmucker, Clapsaddle, and others are well represented. Transportation real photos are very strong in the auction with consignments of award winning displays broken into small lots of riverboats, trolleys, depots, aviation, horsedrawn advertising wagons, and more. A collection of Detroit Publishing, Fred Harvey, Mitchel Publishing and other great state views are broken into manageable lots, which will be of interest to many. Rare Titanic, occupational RPPCs and other rare and wonderful topical cards are found throughout the sale. Box and Bulk material from a number of sources will provide some bargains near the end of the 3rd session. We have made several directional changes in an attempt to catalog material into smaller, more accessible lots, providing more opportunities for collectors, not just dealers, to bid and buy. We have changed the sort order to a standard that will make a much more "user-friendly" catalog. Our direction has been Better Material, Smaller Lots, Easier Access. This has been our goal, and of course we will always have larger box or bulk lots available for dealers and collectors as well. On behalf of Lyn Knight Auctions, I would like to add that we appreciate the opportunity to offer this great material. We appreciate our 38 different consignors, representing many of the top collectors, collections and stocks in the US. providing the material. We invite any of you that think you might like to consign to one of our future auctions to call or email and we will be glad to meet with you and discuss your material. We are currently accepting consignments for our Fall 2008 Sale. We hope you've ordered your catalog, we'll see you online or at the sale, and thank you for your interest and participation.
