African Islamic Culture on WWII Comics
(copyright.Tom Garnhart)
An article by Tom Garnhart, author of
COMIC POSTCARDS OF WWII(Thomas O. Garnhart)(c)
One of the most enjoyable things in collecting postcards is that one keeps being surprised by “new” discoveries that have not previously been catalogued. The closely related hobbies of coin and stamp collecting virtually never provides such a pleasure. Everything minted has been documented. But the postcards world is full of surprises!
A most recent “pleasure of discovery” has been a series of continental size cards issued in northern Africa for American troops during WWII. Up until days before writing this, I knew of only five such cards. The only indication of origin is this faint notation on each card: “This picture only has been approved by base censor ABS APO 759.” A bit of research reveals that this APO was for an American transit station in Casablanca. Two of these cards were postally used, giving confirmation of their origin. The message on one, from Sgt. J. L. Sullivan, begins, “Greetings from Africa Aug. 27, ’43…” The other is from a Marvin Baker: “July 5, 1943, North Africa. Dead Dad, Here is a picture of me & my little “Arabs”…”
Even more recently, an eBay buy yielded a booklet of 12 of these cards in their original form. It contained little more information, other than a cover cartoon for these twelve that reads “To the U. S. Navy: 12 Humoristic Post-Cards.” On examining these cards, I realized that three of those that were already in my collection were Army cards. All 12 in the booklet are Navy. So now the search goes on, since it seems likely that a similar booklet of 12 cards was issued for the Army.
Each of these cards gives a revealing picture as to how Western eyes perceived the Islamic culture of northern Africa!

Editor's Note: Tom Garnhart presented the program last year at the Wichita International Postcard and Paper Show in October. The event was very well attended, and Tom generated lots of interest in the World War II Linen Comics with his Powerpoint presentation. As always, a job well done....thanks Tom.

Letters to the Editor....
We got this bit of information from a Chicago collector about his website. He invites all to visit at http://www.chicagopc.info. This website features postcards of Chicago buildings and other landmarks that were in existence before 1950. He began collecting postcards about 9 years ago, and decided to focus on Chicago. The website has over 3,600 postcards right now, divided into many categories. He says he is adding cards all the time. Although not a web designer, he learned enough to create this site, with the help of a friend. The whole project took over 6 months of hard work. The purpose of creating the website was to share his collection with researchers, Chicago buffs, and anyone else who wants to see what Chicago used to look like. He hopes you enjoy looking through all the cards!
-----He can be contacted by email, he goes by "postcard collector", chicago@bnin.net
and the website is http://www.chicagopc.info
Postcard collectors should always be sure to check out Jim Mehrer's Postal History Mail Bid Sales. Among the thousands of items which are described for their postal markings, Jim always includes a "Picture Postcards" category. His current auction, which closes on October 2, contains more than 500 individually described postcards. The complete catalog and bidding instructions are on his web site at: http://www.postal-history.com/cover.html. The "Picture Postcards" category is on the lower half of the web page at:
