WWII Comic Postcards: The Army-Navy Series
An article by Tom Garnhart, author of
COMIC POSTCARDS OF WWII(Thomas O. Garnhart)
One of the most delightful and longer series of WWII comics is that printed by Tichnor and issued by the “Army-Navy Card Co.”. Most of these are easily recognized with their dark yellow borders and sharp drawings by SAX with rich coloring. There are some 56 such cards that we know about, all numbered. The numbering system runs from 1 to 35 (Army), 101 – 112 (Air Corp), and 201 – 209 (Navy).
Tichnor also issued a “C” series of “Airplane Comics” including ten cards. Nine of these are identical to cards in the Army-Navy series. The tenth is reproduced in two other Tichnor series.
Only recently have we been able to document that each of the first ten cards in the Tichnor Army-Navy series exist in two versions. The more common version is yellow bordered like most others in the series. Most are not signed. The less common and earlier version is full bleed (borderless). Each of these is signed SAX. The second version of the card is redrawn from the first, but in a highly similar style. On nine of the cards, the subject matter is similar, though the inscription may vary. However one card (#5) is entirely dissimilar. Postmarks from 1940 found on several of the full bleed versions indicate that they were produced prior to the US involvement in WWII. They may well have been the inspiration for issuing that more popular yellow bordered version.

Inscriptions on the yellow-bordered cards: 1. Camp – 67 mi. 2. I coulda stayed home and do this. 3. Even the General gets one like this. 4. Is something the matter sergeant? 5. Our ‘Pest” bugler. 6. And that’s not all. 7. Am I supposed to live in that? 8. How do I look? 9. Say! You’re pretty lucky buddy … 10. The General’s car, huh!
Inscriptions on the full-bleed cards: 1. Camp – 67 mi. 2. I’m going to see the Chaplin 3. And style you want – under tow inches. 4. Is something the matter sergeant? 5. (No inscription – 2 soldiers, one smoking with arm in sling) 6. And that’s not all. 7. Am I supposed to live in that? 8. What now? 9. Say! You’re pretty lucky buddy … 10. The General’s car, huh!
Editor's Note: Tom Garnhart presented the program this year at the Wichita International Postcard and Paper Show in October. The event was very well attended, and Tom generated lots of interest in the World War II Linen Comics with his Powerpoint presentation. As always, a job well done....thanks Tom.

Wanted to buy, dealer lot that you have picked out a few "goodies" and don't have time or energy to work down the rest. US, vintage size, limited numbers of duplicates, either in or out of albums. This is for the purpose of resale, so the price needs to be "right", by a beginning collector/dealer. Let me know what you have and how much and give a fairly good description.
