The International
Postcard Scene...European Shows
The Paris postcard show was held January 13 and 14. This is one of the big postcard shows every January in the Theatre de la Mutualite. There you will find about 60 to 70 dealers from around Europe, mostly French of course. But because Paris is easy to reach by air, car or a train you find many international dealers and buyers too, which means that roughly 2000-3000 buyers are coming through the doors. If you are a collector of better French topographical cards it is there where you have to be. Hot is also the French political postcards of course also related to their world wide colonial history. And naturally all topics are there to be found. Irritating is that most of the dealers have their boxes with topics etc. turned towards themselves so you must ask for the section and in French language, to get what you want to see. That has a story. Because of organized crime at big postcard shows all over Europe, dealers want to know what is going where and to whom. Unlike the US you have in Paris very often about 10-15 people at two 8 foot tables, practically all day long and that needs a lot of control. This year I only met one dealer from America who was on a buying mission. Paris is a great show for collectors, but finding US photo views is a waste of time, it simply is not there. England is better place for that. But if you look for Canadian cards then logically you find Canadian cards there. African cards is what you can find there very well too and of course the better artist signed. One of the dealers even has many Wiener Werkstatte postcards, besides Mucha and Kirchner and which show do you find those cards by the hundreds!! Paris is a show for advanced collectors and prices are accordingly. But a hotel ( not US standards) you still find for $80-100. And Paris is still Paris.....a great place to be.

(editors note: Ron Debijl, is a well-known Dutch postcard dealer that exhibits in shows in Europe and the U.S.,
and sells on Ebay, seller id " globalhistory "....thanks Ron for the show info, Jim)

VINTAGE PAPER FAIR ANNOUNCES NEW SAN FRANCISCO SHOW
Hal Lutsky
Vintage Paper Fair, which produces antique postcard & paper shows in Northern & Southern California has announced a new summer show in San Francisco to be held in the Hall of Flowers in Golden Gate Park on August 12 & 13.
The show will be about 70% postcards but will alsocontain all types of ephemera including: stereoviews, labels, brochures, Victorian, sports & transportation memorabilia, photography and much more. There will be about 90 tables at the show and about 40-50 dealers. The promoter expects about a million postcards to be displayed. Typically, Vintage Paper Fair shows have material in all price ranges with postcards from 25 cents to $100 & up.
Admission will be free both days. "It's a bit of an experiment" says promoter Hal Lutsky. "The cost of the hall is reasonable, so I decided to do free admission. I'm not aware of any indoor shows that have free admission. Also, since it's a new show and the market hasn't been that great for shows recently, it can only help attendance."
As a postcard & paper dealer himself, Lutsky says that getting through the summers has always been a challenge. "Paper dealers generally don't like outdoor shows" he continued, "which is mostly what we have here in the summer. The elements are hard on paper and there are very few indoor shows that time of year. Paper dealers always worry about how they're going to survive the summer, so I thought there was a need for a good indoor paper show."
Another reason for the summer show is the fact that San Francisco is a major tourist destination and that's when most tourists visit. "Collectors usually see the same dealers with mostly the same stuff" the promoter continued "so here's a great opportunity for collectors to see completely fresh material. Hopefully, people will plan their vacations around the show".
The show will be held in a beautiful, world class setting. The Hall of Flowers in Golden Gate Park is next to the botanical gardens and across the street from a trendy urban neighborhood full of restaurants and other amenities. While many shows are held in somewhat isolated locations this one is convenient to almost everything. The hall is very close to public transportation and there's a new parking garage at the recently completed De young Museum, about a 10 minute walk from the hall. There is lots of free street parking in the park as well. Lutsky lives about 10 minutes away from the hall and his website contains some hot tips from a San Francisco native on the best places to park.
"People are already asking me if I'll do a show here twice a year" the promoter says. "All I can think of is a story I read years ago. While Christopher Reeve was in the middle of shooting his first Superman movie, he ran into Sean Connery who of course made many James Bond films. He asked Connery how much money he should demand for his next Superman film. 'Just make sure the first one's good' said Connery 'or there won't be a next one'".

LAKE COUNTY DISCOVERY MUSEUM
View the social and cultural landscape of early twentieth century Japan in 100 Views of Japan a special exhibit of Japanese postcards at the Lake County Discovery Museum near Wauconda, IL. The postcards, from the collection of Susan Brown Nicholson, are on display through April 27, 2006 in the Museum's White Room Gallery.
Spanning several decades, the postcards of 100 Views of Japan showcase changing artistic and social ideas influenced by an emerging modern culture and centuries of tradition. In Japan, postcards were used for advertising, marking important occasions, and as an artistic medium. Brought together, these cards provide an insight into Japan and its culture.

The postcards in the exhibit are a portion of the collection of Susan Brown Nicholson, a recognized authority on paper ephemera and author of The Encyclopedia of Antique Postcards. An appraiser of antique paper items, she writes monthly columns for Barr's Postcard News and The Postcard Collector. She also produces three major postcard and ephemera shows in the Chicago area each year. This fall she served as co-juror for the Lake County Discovery Museum's biannual Postcard Art Competition and Exhibition.

Checklist of Curt Teich Linen Comic Postcards
by Thomas O. Garnhart
The Checklist of Curt Teich Linen Comic Postcards is the first definitive and systematic cataloging of linen comic postcards by this quality printer and publisher. Amidst the growing popularity of linens, it is a valuable resource for both collectors and dealers. Some 1548 detailed entries list cards in order of the production. Value ranges are provided to identify the comparative desirability/rarity of each postcard. Detailed information is given about each entry, including inscriptions, series names, and indicators of which are WWII related and which are black racial stereotypes. $24.95 + p/h visit this link for details and scan of cover.
(EDITOR"S NOTE......A new Checklist is coming...Publication of a
new checklist titled Comic Postcards of WWII is expected in early
Spring 2006. (It may also includ large letter military linens)
This new and updated list will include considerably more data than
previous resources. A Pittman and Greiner list, last updated in 2000,
was the best thing previously in print, though its availability was
limited. A helpful feature of this new publication will be an
index of cards by the inscription on the cards face that indicates
the name of the publisher. Since many cards are difficult to
identify, this is of great help to the collector. Illustrations
are being included to define the style of various publishers,
including previously unidentified publishers. This list is being
authored by Dr. Thomas O. Garnhart, author of the popular Checklist
of Curt Teich Linen Comic Postcards.
