CLUB HISTORY
Recollections By A Founding Member
Larry Seymour, July 2005
The Dallas Metroplex Postcard Club got started in June 11, 1983, as a neighboring club to the Cowtown Postcard Club in Fort Worth, started in 1954.Jack Thornhill, Club founder, with James McMillin, founder of the first postcard club in Texas, The Lone Star Postcard Club and then The Cowtown Club and 33 other postcard dealers and collectors of cards, met at the George Dealey Recreation Center to organize the non-profit club, June 11.Of the 35 present, June 11, Larry Seymour is the only member still very active with the Club. The first official Club meeting was held, September 21, 1983, at the Walnut Hill Recreation Center. Meetings have also been held 3 times in a church, in members homes for special holiday parties and regularly held meeting at the Farmers Branch Library for 15 years. Club membership is 52.The Club meets at a new location, Timberglen Recreation Center, 3810 Timberglen Road, Dallas, Texas 75287. Phone 972-306-1090, second Saturday of every month at 1:00 P.M. No meetings are held in July and August. There have been 15 Club sponsored postcard shows and sales inviting dealers from across the country to sell their cards. For the shows, Club members prepare postcard exhibit boards that display their cards, featuring a variety of subjects.
Show promoter, Jim Taylor, started handling the shows in the year 2000 and since then there have been 8 more shows and sales. Usually 2 per year. Information about shows can be obtained by calling 888-451-0340 or email: postcards@courthousequare.net, or website: www.courthousesquare.net.
Lots of extra special postcard presentations at the meetings have been prepared by members sharing their postcard interests and knowledge of what they collect. There are show and tell sessions helping everyone learn more about values and general information about postcards. Also buying, selling, trading and giving away cards, sessions are included. No one has ever regretted getting involved with the Club.
Joining the Dallas Club or any club is educational, informative and fun. It is unbelievable how many postcards relate to and parallel other collecting interests.
There is a postcard for anything you can think of and probably many places and cities you have visited.
There is an annual membership roster, listing all members and their collecting interests. A free reference library and free annual Christmas buffet.
The membership fee is currently $6.00 and has been the same since 1983.
Dallas Metroplex Postcard Club is a non-profit organization promoting an appreciation of history and culture as depicted in postcards by bringing together people who wish to share and learn from this collecting interest.
The Club meets monthly at Timberglen Recreation Center, 3810 Timberglen Road, Dallas, Texas 75287. Phone 972-306-1090, second Saturday of every month at 1:00 P.M. No meetings are held in July and August.
For more information contact the Club president, Al Asprion. email: dallaspostcardclub@comcast.com or call 817-267-5920.
Austin Texas
The Capital of Texas Postcard Club is in its fourteenth year. The Club meets monthly, usually on the second Wednesday evening of each month (except for July and August when we are on summer break) from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. In June we normally have an ice cream social on a weekend instead of our monthly meeting.
Our monthly meetings are held at the Senior Activity Center, 2874 Shoal Crest Ave. near 29th and Lamar in Austin. Enter the parking lot from Shoal Crest Ave., which is behind the building and parallels North Lamar one block to the east. We meet in the room at the south end of the building. Our annual postcard show is held in February. The next Capital of Texas Postcard Show will be held February 24th & 25th 2006. Our club is recreational for the most part, but we do invite dealers to our meetings who provide access to postcards; we share our collections and interests; and best of all, we make new friends while we exchange postcards, ideas and information. Our next get-together will be our Holiday Party, Wednesday, December 14th.
As usual, you are invited to bring along any postcards that you would like to sell, trade, or show-and-tell, so round 'em up and bring 'em in!
If you have a collecting interest you would like to share with the group at a future meeting, please let us know and we will schedule you in! Remember - this opportunity to share with the club is informal, informative, and it's infrequent!
